i’m back on the horse! (i have an ehwaz tattoo on my face, so that’s sort of a rune joke) — i have bookings available for march — online, recorded or here in my kansas city office. use this link! if my availability doesn’t work for you, shoot me an email with the windows you have and we’ll figure something out. no experience necessary! just your curiosity, willingness to show up and see what shows up.
i’ve been thinking about all the ways we hurt ourselves when we value our art, work, life, etc, based on the currently dominant cultural metrics, and the remedy offered by an earth-centering spiritual practice.
art vs sports, intellect vs physical strength, the allure of a steady job that offers a surface stability vs the romanticized notion of ‘living your purpose’ — i know you get it, i know that all the increasingly common counter-arguments (dove campaign for real beauty-style campaigns to just love yourself! divorce your self-worth from your bank account!) feel as over-played as they do ineffective at getting to the core places of self-abandonment embedded in us by the christo-capitalist mind virus.
i know this particular flavor of harm can be easy to dismiss at a time when such visible (and glorified) violence puts so many lives at constant risk, at tax-payer expense. and it’s probably not a huge shock to anyone that the wanton vampirism of the rich is in some part enabled by the general malaise and exhaustion of the global underclass.
but i continue to surprise myself in my own process with the ways i undermine the impact and efficacy of my life’s work — the collective change and liberation i’ve been committed to for over a decade at this point — based on beliefs i’m still rooting out about what kind of people matter, who deserves love and resources and who doesn’t, who is safe to exist on the planet.
AND — i keep finding a key remedy woven into my divinatory practice. the tarot doesn’t discriminate — each of the suits hold the other in balance. the zodiac is a circle, a wheel, with all aspects of life given equal place — the mundane physical labor required for life sits in balance with the places we’re called to tend relationship with spirit (aka the 6th and 12th house). and of course when working in journey space, the helping spirits are pretty much baffled at the way i constrict and deny myself by comparing the path of a healing-teaching artist to some imagined “safer,” “more conventional” path. they love us all the same — rich or poor, banker or therapist — they also don’t mince words about all the insidious ways we can each do harm to bodies and planet, whether we think of ourselves as powerful or not.
this more earth-centering, less human-obsessed perspective is often challenging to palette, but always a medicine for my heart, especially when i get to sit across from a client wanting to, say, start a new business venture, take time off to focus on an artistic pursuit, do something illogical in the name of a romantic relationship, or take anything our culture would describe as a risk that seems terrifying and crazy but deep down they know they just must. sometimes the cards say “jump!” — sometimes they caution, “yes, but wait, just a bit…” or help us hone in on a more true and authentic motivation behind a challenging choice — but whatever divination offers us, it’s never given in judgement. there’s no hierarchy of value from the perspective of spirit. from the earth, on the other hand, if our vision is truly grounded, if we’re willing to understand resource beyond just the material, and we’re able to find the rhythm and dance with life, then we will find sustenance — not unlimited growth / capitalist excess / “abundance” bullshit, necessarily, but sufficiency — a divine enough-ness, that ebbs and flows with the season, transforms as it transforms us. (and even horrific, systemic tragedies have a place in a truly whole cosmology — your willingness to dance with life doesn’t mean you won’t suffer, doesn’t mean you won’t die — there is a mystery here that persists beyond life, as much as it also demands we show up for our lives in such a way that we create a safer, more just future for all of us.)
one of the best things about doing divination with clients? when folks get their deep feelings and intuition validated by spirit. often the fears just start sliding away just based on that. life is fucking scary! (and don’t i know it!) authenticity does require risk and sacrifice, but with the right guidance and resourcing it can be an adventure, not just an endurance test in the capitalist rat race.
there’s something really profound about the fact that divination works for anyone willing, that we’ve been given these relatively simple tools to enter into conversation with the cosmos, that everyone who is willing to humble themselves to an altar or oracle are seen and loved equally by spirit, not just the “good people,” certainly not just the rich, but all of us — we are seen and loved in all the ways we have acquiesced to a violent system under duress, all the harm we’ve done to ourselves and everyone else for that and we are seen and loved as the people we could be, the ones we are becoming as we learn to go within, to bring love to hate, to say no to a system of value based on fears and false beliefs about hierarchy and separation from the earth and say yes to love as the organizing principle around which all orbits and true value as unique and intrinsic to all that exists. phew! yeah. it’s “a reading” and it’s also all of that. that’s why i fucking love doing this work!
so — i’ve revised my offerings this spring, and i’ve actually dropped my prices a bit to stay true to what feels right for the changes unfolding in my life. this work requires a daily relational tending with my helping spirits, so if you want to offer an additional sacrifice, i will happily receive it in support of my continued growth and that of my community organizing and stewardship at inner space. you can also now book recorded readings — because i know time is precious and often feels scarce, and sometimes we need a divination without the intensity that can come with meeting face to face. wherever you are, however this crazy life buffet has arranged your plate, i honor you, thank you for being here, and hope you keep following the tugs and whispers of your deepest heart on the path of purpose, service and growth.
